If remote, @ or DM me on Slack. If we're both in the space, face to face is even better! (I have 'office hours' Friday nights, and may be randomly in the space at other times. But I occasionally need to skip office hours, so it's best to Slack me ahead of time if you're relying on me being there at a given time.)
* Effective bed width (maximum design width): 24 inches.
* Effective cut length: Infinite
* Cuts: Any vinyl product in Vinyl Zone storage; any commercial vinyl. Please check other products with coordinator before use.
* Blades: In top left or middle left drawer of vinyl desk

* Please pay for vinyl and transfer tape you take of a roll.

|Instructions=

Quick start:
* All of the vinyl in the racks is approved for use. Some rolls may have a label inside for more information; see "About Vinyl" for more information.
* The cutter lets you specify the speed of the cut and how hard the blade presses down. There is no single best cut force or speed; we recommend experimenting using the cutter's Test function (see below).
* The vinyl laptop has special software, Sure Cuts a Lot 4 Pro, that we use to send designs to the cutter. You can create text and simple images directly in SCaL; you can also import vectors or designs you've created with other programs.
* Once your design is ready in SCaL, in the menu bar, select Cutter -> Cut with USCutter to open the send dialogue, then the 'Cut' button to send it to the vinyl cutter.
* If something goes wrong, you may press 'Offline/Pause' on the cutter to pause. In an emergency, it's perfectly safe to power the cutter off in the middle of a cut; it will re-home itself on start.

About Vinyl Types
'Vinyl' can mean a lot of things. We recommend you start with the regular vinyl if this is your first time.

* Regular vinyl is colored on the outside; it's on a white or dull backing, and if you peel the edge, it has a sticky back. The top half of the gray vinyl cutter cabinet is filled with regular vinyl.
* The bottom half is heat transfer vinyl. We use this in the T-shirt or mug presses. It's cut somewhat like regular vinyl, then melted onto a garment with a careful application of heat and pressure.
* The black metal rack is the weird stuff: Magnetic vinyl, clear static cling vinyl, masking film, and others. Some of these can be really useful.

We're making an effort to label all rolls of vinyls. If you can't find a good label, please post a message and a picture in the Slack
#vinyl-zone
channel.

Other Information Sources
If you learn best by watching or doing:

* A good tutorial on the basics of weeding and application is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SjqH0rfTCMM
* Generally, nose around youtube and you can teach yourself the process in a few minutes!
* Alternately, training may be available on Tour Fridays, or by request. Please check at the vinyl desk on Friday evening. Or post a request in the
#vinyl_zone
channel.

1. Sure-Cuts-a-Lot
You can do your design directly in SCAL, or import from other formats.

# Open Sure Cuts-A-Lot Pro on the laptop. (The icon's on the desktop.)
# When it opens, you'll see a grid. This is measured in inches; an inch on-screen will be an inch on the vinyl.
# Find the 'T' text control; click on the mat somewhere and type some text.
# Select the arrow control, then drag your design down to the lower-right corner of the design workspace. The cut head will start at the lower right-hand and go left and up to cut, as far as your design goes on the mat, so you want it to be close.

2. Load material
# Grab some vinyl with a removable backing. (Peel the corner just to make sure.) There's lots of odd stuff in the scrap box that will waste your time. If you can't find a scrap of nice simple vinyl, grab a roll. Advanced stuff like heat-transfer material is out-of-scope for this quick instruction.
# If the rubber pinch-rollers are pinched down against the metal drive-roller, reach around back and lift the levers. The pinch-roller units can now slide left and right on the carriage arm.
## Note how the metal drive-roller is actually two rollers with a gap in the middle. Don't position a pinch-roller over this gap. There's a white Π symbol on the carriage arm to indicate this no-zone.
# Position your material in the machine and position the pinch-rollers on its edges and one in the middle. The blade can't move any further right than its home position, so having material rightward of that is pointless. It should extend maybe an inch forward of the blade.
# Lower the pinch-rollers again (levers in back) and check that the vinyl is secure.

3. Prep
# Turn on the cutter (the power switch is on the left side of the machine, where the power and USB cables connect.)
# You need to tell the machine how fast it should cut and how hard the blade should press down.
## When first turned on, the cutter will reset to 12 inches per second and 0 grams of downforce. That won't cut!
## There are four arrow buttons on the machine, labeled 'V+', 'V-', 'F+', and 'F'. Use these to set cut force and speed (see below.)
# What values do you need?
## There may be a label inside the roll with recommended cut force and speed. If so, this is a good place to start.
## Otherwise, a good general choice is 50 grams of force and 8 inches per second of velocity.
# There is no best choice for all cuts. See the troubleshooting section for instructions on figuring out the best cut settings.

4. Cut
# Back at the laptop, hit the "cutter" button at the top-right of the SCAL toolbar. Or open 'Cutter' -> 'Cut With US Cutter'.
# In the 'Cut Settings' dialogue:
## Your image will appear at the left, roughly where it will cut on the loaded roll. (If it's in the grey area at the bottom, that's OK - just make sure you've got at least an inch of ACTUAL vinyl poking out in front of the knife.)
## If your image is reversed, find the 'Mirror H' checkbox and uncheck it. It's about halfway down.
# Find the 'Cut' button at the bottom and hit it. Your cut will begin automatically; enjoy the sweet song of stepper motors!

5. Then...
# Once the cut is done, the machine will stop automatically.
# Raise the pinch rollers, pull the roll forward, and cut off your section with scissors.
# Examine the result:
## Crack the piece in your hands and see if the cut-lines split cleanly. Do pieces lift out easily? Is the backing lightly scored? If so, proceed to weeding, below!
## If not, try again with more downforce, more blade protrusion, slower speed, or a new blade. (There are details in the troubleshooting section.)
## If the backing is cut all the way through, reduce the above settings instead.

6. Weed
# Now you'll need to peel off the parts of the design that you don't want.
# There's a box of dental picks to help with this. Some folks just use fingernails.

7. Apply transfer tape
# At this point, your design should be sitting atop the backing paper all by itself. You could peel the pieces off and manually stick them to your target, but vinyl is stretchy and it's hard to maintain alignment. Ergo, transfer tape!
# Grab the smallest roll of transfer tape that fits your design. The larger stuff is much harder to handle.
# Pull off enough tape, cut it free from the roll, and lay it over your design. Try to avoid bubbles and wrinkles. Smooth it down with your hands or one of the plastic paddle tools.
# Trim around the edges with scissors. If your design cares about being applied "level", trimming one edge straight will help with that later.
# Your design is now "portable", with transfer tape on top, vinyl in the middle, and backing on bottom. Slip it into your bag and sneak it to your victim's car in the middle of the night...

8. Surface prep and application
# Windex or otherwise clean your friend's bumper; crud will inhibit adhesion.
# Peel apart the "portable" stack: As you separate the backing paper from the transfer tape, you want the vinyl to go with the tape. You may find that laying it face-down and peeling the backing off at a sharp angle helps with this.
# Get the angle right! You only get one shot at this...
# Lay the vinyl onto the surface smoothly. Use a paddle (or just the edge of a credit card) to push air bubbles out. Stubborn bubbles can be pricked with a pin or blade.
# Peel off the transfer tape and marvel at your work!
# Yes, yes, application fluid is a thing. Youtube it. Out-of-scope for this simple tutorial.

9. Clean up and pay for supplies you used
# Leave the zone tidy! A minute with a windex-damp paper towel is really appreciated.
# Toss a few bucks in the wooden moneybox or use the Paypal button in the zone infobox.
# Price-list? FIXME!
# Something like $2/foot is probably good. If you used scrap vinyl, that's free and you're just paying for the transfer tape which is pretty cheap (like 20¢/ft?), but we appreciate you paying for it!

Troubleshooting
General Notes
# Text smaller than half an inch won't cut very well. You may be able to improve this by lowering the cut speed.

Moving the Cut Head
You don't have to start with the head at the lower left (home) position. If you press the 'Offline/Pause' button once, the screen text will change to 'Move'. Now you can use the arrow keys to move the head around.

Once you've found a position you like, press 'Origin' or 'Test' once; the head will stay where it is. Or press 'Offline/Pause' again to cancel the move, or 'Reset' to move the head back to the home position.

Testing Cut Force and Speed
# You may need to dial in the cut force.

Change or Adjust Blade
If setting the downforce higher isn't working, you can try lowering the blade in its holder, or replacing it with a new one. Blades are in the top left or top middle drawer of the vinyl desk. 45 degree blades are good for thin vinyls, 60 degree blades for thick vinyl (> 6mm in thickness)

# The blade holder (vertical threaded part) is clamped into the carriage by a horizontal thumbscrew. Loosen it and you should be able to lift the blade holder straight out.
# Loosen the knurled locknut on the blade holder. You can now screw the body in and out to extend or retract the blade by small amounts.
## I typically aim for about a fingernail-thickness worth of blade protrusion, maybe less.
# You can also eject the blade by pushing the protruding tail at the top of the holder. It's just held in there magnetically, so grab the tip and pull it out. Wipe off any vinyl schmutz and drop it back in.
# Reinstall the blade holder to the carriage and gently snug the thumbscrew. Easy does it!
# Push gently down on the carriage and verify that the blade touches the vinyl.

# Turn on the cutter. It should home its carriage and then just sit there.
# Hit the "cutter" button at the top-right of the SCAL toolbar. Purge the word "print" from your mind, this is not a printer, this is not a printer+cutter, this is a pure cutter.
# Near the top of the cutter dialog is a "test connection" button, click it. The cutter should twitch a bit, this shows that the USB is talking. If not, try the Reset button on the cutter.
# If you want to jog the vinyl around (say to check straightness), hit the Offline button and the arrow keys become movement keys. You can also set a new 0,0 position with the Origin button if needed. When done moving, go Online again.
# While the cutter is Online, the arrow keys adjust Force and Velocity.

You may do run this on your own laptop or the Toshiba in the vinyl zone.

Setup for use on your own laptop

#Make sure your favorite Linux distribution is operating properly
#Use your package mangler to install inkscape, pyserial, (FIXME: other python modules which you probably need but I can't remember)
#Download InkCut from http://sourceforge.net/projects/inkcut/files/InkCut-1.0.tar.gz/download and extract its contents to ~/.config/inkscape/extensions/

General usage

#Open your design in Inkscape. Almost any file that contains vector graphics data can be imported. SVG is preferred since Inkscape converts everything to SVG anyway.
#Confirm that your dimensions are correct if you imported from anything that isn't SVG.
#Select the shapes (and only those shapes) you want to cut and make sure they are stored as paths, not rectangles, circles, etc. (Path --> Object to path)
#If you have rectangles, do this to make them cut more nicely: Path --> Simplify (Inkscape does not necessarily close rectangles and InkCut deals with open shapes poorly)
#Select the shapes of the color you want to cut
#Extensions --> Cutter/Plotter --> InkCut v1.0

##Note that InkCut has some window layer issues... you may have to drag Inkscape around to uncover some of its dialogs. You'll see what I mean when suddenly everything stops working.
#Set position with the X-Axis and Y-Axis. Remember that the lower left corner of the preview screen is where the knife is sitting right now: the lower right corner of the cut area on the vinyl. Bend your mind around until this makes sense.
#Click the Properties button to check that the serial connection is set up correctly as in the figure. Port needs to be set to whatever shows up when you plug in the plotter, normally /dev/ttyUSB0. If it does not show up in the drop-down menu, close InkCut completely, then ensure the cutter is plugged in and powered on that no other programs are trying to access that particular port.
#Look at the Options tab. Note that most of these knobs do absolutely nothing because there is no code written for them yet (project anyone?). Make sure that "Send to cutter/plotter" is checked.
#Load vinyl in plotter as above.
#Click Plot Paths. This opens up a window where you can preview the HPGL if you want. (FIXME: Does adding !ST1; after initial IN; fix anything if cutting fails?)
#Click Send and make a note of what happens.
##Does the cutter start cutting your design?
##Does the cutter finish your design exactly as you expected?
##Does it get partway and suddenly slice through all the unused vinyl and stop at a random point in space?
##Does InkCut just hang for more than a couple minutes?
##Does InkCut die immediately with either an error message or Inkscape telling you that there was an error message but not let you see it?
##Does the Send window go away very quickly and return to the main Inkcut window without actually doing any cutting?
#Record your results. This process needs debugging. Mention it on IRC too.
#Play around with it a little and see if you can get it to fail in a different way.

#vinyl-zone
channel.
* A good tutorial on the basics of weeding and application is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SjqH0rfTCMM
* Generally, nose around youtube and you can teach yourself the process in a few minutes!

# If you've made any adjustments, hit "test connection" again in SCAL. If all is good....

#Extensions --> Cutter/Plotter --> InkCut v1.0

** Good question. Seems like a failed file gets stuck in a waiting directory and that keeps any additional files from getting plotted. The junk failed file(s) must be removed before the plotter will accept new files.
A good tutorial on the basics of weeding and application is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SjqH0rfTCMM
Generally, nose around youtube and you can teach yourself the process in a few minutes!
Manual:
|Rules=* Please pay for vinyl and transfer tape you take of a roll. Vinyl in the scrap-bin is free since whoever removed it from the roll should've paid for it, but even with scrap vinyl you're still using new transfer tape and that stuff adds up.
* Price list ???? FIXME
|Instructions=A quick tutorial of your first cut:

Design
#Open Sure Cuts-A-Lot on the laptop. You can do your design directly in SCAL, or import from other formats. Importing is left as an exercise for the reader.
#Think carefully about which part of your design you want to be vinyl that you "keep" and which part will be white-space where you'll weed out the vinyl. This trips people up.
#Position your design near the lower-right corner of the design workspace. Ruler units are inches.
#Multi-color designs are out-of-scope for this quick instruction.
#If you're just starting out, CHOOSE A VERY SIMPLE DESIGN. Something like an "X" and an "O" is all you need to prove the worfklow, then come back and do something cooler.
#Text smaller than half an inch might not cut accurately and can be challenging to weed. Go large. For the "DIY / i3Detroit" oval bumper sticker, aim for the DIY to be about 2" and the i3Detroit to be about 3/4".

Load material
#Grab some vinyl with a removable backing. (Peel the corner just to make sure.) There's lots of odd stuff in the scrap box that will waste your time. If you can't find a scrap of nice simple vinyl, grab a roll. Advanced stuff like heat-transfer material is out-of-scope for this quick instruction.
#If the rubber pinch-rollers are pinched down against the metal drive-roller, reach around back and lift the levers. The pinch-roller units can now slide left and right on the carriage arm.
#Note how the metal drive-roller is actually two rollers with a gap in the middle. Don't position a pinch-roller over this gap. There's a white Π symbol on the carriage arm to indicate this no-zone.
#Position your material in the machine and position the pinch-rollers on its edges and one in the middle. The blade can't move any further right than its home position, so having material rightward of that is pointless. It should extend maybe an inch forward of the blade.
#Lower the pinch-rollers again (levers in back) and check that the vinyl is secure.

Adjust blade
#You probably don't need to do this, if it was previously used for similar material.
#The blade holder (vertical threaded part) is clamped into the carriage by a horizontal thumbscrew. Loosen it and you should be able to lift the blade holder straight out.
#Loosen the knurled locknut on the blade holder. You can now screw the body in and out to extend or retract the blade by small amounts.
#I typically aim for about a fingernail-thickness worth of blade protrusion, maybe less.
#You can also eject the blade by pushing the protruding tail at the top of the holder. It's just held in there magnetically, so grab the tip and pull it out. Wipe off any vinyl schmutz and drop it back in.
#Reinstall the blade holder to the carriage and gently snug the thumbscrew. Easy does it!
#Push gently down on the carriage and verify that the blade touches the vinyl.

Cut
#Turn on the cutter. It should home its carriage and then just sit there.
#Hit the "cutter" button at the top-right of the SCAL toolbar. Purge the word "print" from your mind, this is not a printer, this is not a printer+cutter, this is a pure cutter.
#Near the top of the cutter dialog is a "test connection" button, click it. The cutter should twitch a bit, this shows that the USB is talking. If not, try the Reset button on the cutter.
#If you want to jog the vinyl around (say to check straightness), hit the Offline button and the arrow keys become movement keys. You can also set a new 0,0 position with the Origin button if needed. When done moving, go Online again.
#While the cutter is Online, the arrow keys adjust Force and Velocity. Force of around 50 grams and velocity of 6-8 inches/sec should be a good starting point.
#If you've made any adjustments, hit "test connection" again in SCAL. If all is good....
#Hit the "cut" button and enjoy the sweet song of stepper motors!

Check cut quality
#Crack the piece in your hands and see if the cut-lines split cleanly. Do pieces lift out easily? Is the backing lightly scored? If so, proceed to weeding, below!
#If not, try again with more downforce, more blade protrusion, slower speed, or a new blade. (There's a box of blades in the drawer.)
#If the backing is cut all the way through, reduce the above settings instead.

Weed
#Remember which part of your design is the "keep" portion? Time to remove everything else!
#There's a box of dental picks to help with this. Some folks just use fingernails.
#If you're sticking weeded pieces to the desk for safe-keeping during the process, please get them to the trash afterward.

Apply transfer tape
#At this point, your design should be sitting atop the backing paper all by itself. You could peel the pieces off and manually stick them to your target, but vinyl is stretchy and it's hard to maintain alignment. Ergo, transfer tape!
#Grab the smallest roll of transfer tape that fits your design. The larger stuff is much harder to handle.
#Pull off enough tape, cut it free from the roll, and lay it over your design. Try to avoid bubbles and wrinkles. Smooth it down with your hands or one of the plastic paddle tools.
#Trim around the edges with scissors. If your design cares about being applied "level", trimming one edge straight will help with that later.
#Your design is now "portable", with transfer tape on top, vinyl in the middle, and backing on bottom. Slip it into your bag and sneak it to your victim's car in the middle of the night...

Clean up and pay for supplies you used
#Leave the zone tidy! A minute with a windex-damp paper towel is really appreciated.
#Toss a few bucks in the wooden moneybox or use the Paypal button in the zone infobox.
#Price-list? FIXME!
#Something like $2/foot is probably good. If you used scrap vinyl, that's free and you're just paying for the transfer tape which is pretty cheap (like 20¢/ft?), but we appreciate you paying for it!

Surface prep and application
#Windex or otherwise clean your friend's bumper; crud will inhibit adhesion.
#Peel apart the "portable" stack: As you separate the backing paper from the transfer tape, you want the vinyl to go with the tape. You may find that laying it face-down and peeling the backing off at a sharp angle helps with this.
#Get the angle right! You only get one shot at this...
#Lay the vinyl onto the surface smoothly. Use a paddle (or just the edge of a credit card) to push air bubbles out. Stubborn bubbles can be pricked with a pin or blade.
#Peel off the transfer tape and marvel at your work!
#Yes, yes, application fluid is a thing. Youtube it. Out-of-scope for this simple tutorial.

InkCut method for those who prefer open-source software

#Extensions --> Cutter/Plotter --> InkCut v1.0

|FAQs=*Why won't the plotter start after hitting the "Send" button?
** Good question. Seems like a failed file gets stuck in a waiting directory and that keeps any additional files from getting plotted. The junk failed file(s) must be removed before the plotter will accept new files.
|Intro=
Used to apply heat transfer vinyl to fabric evenly and consistently.
- Bed: 16.5" wide by 15" deep
- Temperature Range: TBD
- Initial heating time: perhaps 2 minutes to 350 degrees
|Instructions=# Plug in the power cord. Turn on the power switch.
## Power switch location: On the left side of the head, find the "Power" label near where the black cord enters the head. The switch is on the underside of the head right next to the label.
## The label's partly hidden by a screw; if you're having trouble finding it, it's visible near the center of this photo of the press from the rear.
# Set up the temperature based on application (eg. Heat press vinyl for t-shirt is normally 350-375F) after press "TEMP" button. Use arrow buttons to adjust temperature.
## Here's how the display is laid out. **We don't have the "Pressure Bar Graph"** (this is the similar model described in "Heat_Press_DC8_manual.pdf", linked from the "Documentation" area).
###
# The machine is able to set a timer too with program button but for a few second heat pressing for shirt it may not necessary. It's probably easier just count the seconds.
# Wait for the hot plate for preheating until come to the temperature you set. There's not alarm tell you if the plate reach set temp so you need to check it constantly. Leave the top heat plate in open position while waiting.
# Swing the hot plate on the side. Put the side of shirt you want to use on the silicone pad and put the vinyl on to the shirt with the semi-transparent protecting film on top. Clamp down the handle until locked in position.
# Keep the hot plate in close position for a certain time based on your application (eg. Heat press vinyl for t-shirt is normally 5-7sec).
# Open the hot plate and swing the hot plate to the side. Gently peel off the semi-transparent protecting film (try to hold down the vinyl a bit if necessary).
# Cover the vinyl with beige cover sheet (currently stored in space 120 area). Then close the hot plate onto the beige cover sheet for anther certain time based on application (eg. Heat press vinyl for t-shirt is again normally 5-7sec).
# Open the hot plate and swing the hot plate to take your finished shirt out. YAY!
# If you have more than one place for to vinyl at, repeat step 6-8.
i3-Announce Invite:
This is the google group for i3 Detroit Announce. It is NOT for day to day business. It is important information that every member needs to read, such as vote announcements. This list will convey parking tickets mostly but also, should there be a flood, fire, robotic revolution, or any other major event affecting all members' use of the space, it'll be announced here.

Please don't filter this one; read it as it comes in!

Hello,

I was checking on some membership paperwork today and noticed that you haven't accepted your invitation to i3Detroit's members-only Google Group:

https://www.i3detroit.org/wiki/Mailing_list

That means you're not receiving the group's internal communications, and it also means we haven't gotten your introductory post to learn about our newest member! Please look back into your email, it should've come from "i3detroit <i3detroit+noreply@googlegroups.com>" or something very much like that.

Hello,

I was checking on some membership paperwork today and noticed that you haven't accepted your invitation to i3Detroit's important-announcements Google Group:

https://www.i3detroit.org/wiki/Mailing_list

That means you're not receiving the low-traffic announcements like elections, important space news, and abandoned property that might get thrown out! Please look back into your email, it should've come from "i3detroit-announce <i3detroit-announce+noreply@googlegroups.com>" or something very much like that.

Phase 1 to 2
Congratulations, you have completed the steps for Phase 1 of the i3Detroit new member adventure! You should have received a pair of emails, one for your account on the i3 CRM (please go there and input your emergency contact and other useful information) and another granting you access to modify the i3Detroit Wiki (if you add some stuff to your user page there people will know who you are, you should do that). Please set up passwords for both of these services and when that is done your journey will continue with Phase 2! Good luck!

P.S. (anything they missed in phase 1 that's not bad enough to delay the process but should still be brought to their attention)

Invite for Memberification
You should have recently received emails inviting you to the i3detroit (private) and i3-announce mailing lists! Please join these lists and submit your introduction to the private list (see your i3detroit invitation for details).

After that's done it is time for the final step in your journey to becoming an i3 Detroit member, the Memberification Meeting! These take place after the first general member meeting of the month (99% of the time this is the first Tuesday, but check the calendar to be sure). It is advisable (though not required) that you bring a laptop to this appointment to simplify dues payment set up. Please respond to this message with your availability so we know how many new members to expect at each session! If this time doesn't work for you let us know and we'll work something out.

Vice-Presidents: How to Miss a Meeting
When a Vice-President will miss a Board/Member meeting, best practice is to inform the Board email list. That way, the group knows to not delay the meeting waiting for everyone to arrive. It is not necessary to provide an excuse. It is also considerate, before taking a break from the work you are doing together with your colleagues, to briefly inform them, so they know to move forward without holding up deliberations.

Invite for Memberification:
You should have recently received emails inviting you to the i3detroit (private) and i3-announce mailing lists! Please join these lists and submit your introduction to the private list (see your i3detroit invitation for details).

Mailing Lists and How to Use Them
i3-Public Invite:

This email list is open to anyone who wants to speak with i3 members. This list is for you if:
* You are hosting an event at the space which will be open to the public.
* Have business that doesn't have to be kept space-confidential.
* Are a prospective member hoping someone can sign you in to work on your journey to membership.
Joining this mailing list is a required prerequisite to becoming a member of i3 so, please accept this invitation!

i3-Private Invite:

This is the members-only list where you will find day to day business such as tool questions, policy discussions, event planning, etc. It's the place to ask most questions if you can't find info in the wiki! Get in the habit of reading it often, this is how we stay up to date on the group, but it can be high-volume so folders and filters are probably a good idea.

Start by posting an introduction, tell us:

* Who you are (name, preferred pronouns, and if you use a handle or nickname, tell us the story behind it!)
* How you first heard about i3Detroit
* What your talents are that you hope to share with other members
* What you're most interested in learning
* If you had a(nother) superpower, what would it be?

Please include your name in the subject line (like "New member Pat Smith"), and it would also be really helpful to include a photo if you can.

* Remove old Graveyard:
** Cut into 2-3 tables
** Mount money sucker equipment to wall with el bracket
** Move sign-in table backwards to where graveyard was located
** Create printout or sign for new graveyard.
*** If design work isn't your thing, the craft/vinyl coordinator is happy to handle vector design, or to paint a sign, but can't handle the physical aspects of cutting plywood or doing a laser job. Check with Kevin Flory for more details.
(Break?) open vinyl filing cabinet
* The special materials vinyl cabinet, currently sitting behind the heat press near the cutting mat, doesn't open when I rattle/tug the handles.
** As there's no keyhole and no known key, I'm not quite sure what's going on. It's likely there's some sort of lock or catch mechanism; since I've got mobility and dexterity issues, this task may be as simple as finding a button somewhere other than the front surface that unlocks the whole. I didn't have it in me to do more then tug the handles and examine the front.
** Non-destructive methods are preferred; if a destructive method is used, the cabinet must remain capable of normal use (drawers can still be pulled in and out, remains structurally stable and sound, etc.)
** The cabinet's at the far end of the cutting mat, beside the heat press, and is temporarily hidden by a stashed display case; it's just visible in the shadow.

Move telephone -or- mount display case
The display case from the second photo above needs to be placed in an accessible yet secure spot somewhere adjacent to the vinyl zone.

My preferred way to do this is remove the (unused) telephone from its mounting on the special supplies cabinet, and not bother remounting it elsewhere. (As I recall, we now actively discourage answering the phone.) Then the case could simply sit by the special supplies cabinet.

Should this prove impractical, the case needs to be mounted elsewhere. Here's a reference shot of the case, followed by the placement requirements.

The requirements are:

* Accessible from the floor; easily "opened".
** Tour guides (and anyone else who's interested) should be able to walk up, open the case, and take things out to pass around to visitors. The case's purpose is to protect the contents from dust and bumps, and keep them off of working surfaces; it's NOT to seal the contents away from everyone. Having contents easily visible from the aisle is a huge plus.
** This case is exactly like the one mounted to one side of the A-side entry door, opposite the log-in sheet. That means it "opens" by sliding the acrylic panel to one side. The acrylic isn't fastened down; it sits in a pair of grooves and slides out.
* Directionally oriented.
** In the photo above, an internal horizontal shelf is visible. There are slots (not currently in use) for two more in the same direction. If the case can be mounted so the shelves remain horizontal, it'll be much more useful.
** Protected from accidental bumps. If protecting the case weren't important, it could just sit on the floor in the aisle by the vinyl zone desk. However, long experience has shown that, eventually, everything on an aisleway at floor level will get hit by the Genie or a cart, potentially quite hard. That would be worse than no display case at all, both for the case and the contents, which will include a substantial amount of glassware.
* Removable/remountable. Much like the case by the front door, the case should be removable for reuse elsewhere without major repairs.

It's occurred to me that "mounting" between the stanchions of the red pallet rack, by the aisle, might be enough to protect it. While very accessible, such a mounting seems complicated to build, and would need to be removable once Vinyl moves out of the area. I also haven't yet gotten buyin from Lew, so please check with me before carrying this one out!

There's wall space by the back of Vinyl above the trash can. However, a substantial amount of furring would be needed to 'push' the case out from the wall enough to open it without crashing into the adjacent pallet rack, and to work around the support piller.

The wall space opposite to Vinyl, on the outer wall of the Fab Lab, is being used for temporary equipment storage. It probably shouldn't be used as a mounting location.

If it can be easily done, it might be acceptable to mount the case to the front of the Vinyl Zone desk, facing the Bike Zone and bathroom. However, such a mounting must be easy to remove (in the case Bike Zone decides to put something by the desk) and must not interfere with how the desk works (can't block desk drawers or compromise the structural integrity).
* There is a grill at the space!
* If you have a crockpot, please consider using it! We don't have proper kitchen at the space (yet!), so crockpots and such will be helpful for supplying us all with hot food.
* Please avoid common allergens (or put them on the side) if they're optional in your recipe: nuts, dairy, wheat, etc.

There are now two separate cleaning/sanitary supply storage areas:

1. A side: Black common cleaning supplies cabinet, broom/mop rack, shelves by the largest bathroom
2. B side: Cleaning supplies shelf, mops/buckets, and bucket dump sink on the lower story of the 2-story structure between Jewelry Zone and Wood Shop (hereafter called the 'underloft').

Create printouts so users who only know to look in one location can find the other one, including supplies they might expect to find in a different location.

* At minimum, since mops and their buckets were historically stored in/by the A-side mop rack, print out and post a wall sign telling users that mops and buckets may be in the B-side cleaning area, preferably with info on exactly where that is. (See pictures below if you're not sure.)
* It might also be nice to note (somehow, somewhere) that the space supply of not-mop buckets apparently also live in this location. (They're just visible in the middle of the photo below, behind the mop buckets.)
* Additional printouts to post inside the A-side cabinet door and by the B-side shelf would be nice (indicating that there may be more supplies on the other side).
* If you're feeling fancy, design the printouts so you can cut the paper down to 7 1/2" wide. That width can easily fit through the Craft Room laminator (on the uppermost shelf above the paper cutters).
* Another nice touch: Create a colorful printout or sign that can be placed on the wall facing the entrance to the B-side. The point is that someone confused, glancing in from the Wood Shop, should be able to tell that the mop dump fixture is in the back, hidden by the stairs and temporary storage.
* Since we're still in a transitional period, it's probably best not to put a huge amount of effort, and it's probably too early for permanent signs.

Mops and buckets apparently now live here (?). The mop sink and dump fixture are at the right of the picture; this location is directly on the opposite side of the wall from the Jewelry Zone/Kiln Zone sink.

This is exactly the same angle and direction as the photo above; we've simply moved to the back of the underloft. The stairs visible in the photo above are just to the right of this photo's location.
Vinyl Shop

This list is current as of 2023-02-18.

- (Break?) open vinyl filing cabinet
- The special materials vinyl cabinet, currently sitting behind the heat press near the cutting mat, can't be opened.
- As there's no keyhole and no known key, the coordinator isn't quite sure what's going on. It's likely there's some sort of lock or catch mechanism; since the coordinator has occasional mobility and dexterity issues, this task may be as simple as finding a button somewhere other than the front surface that unlocks the whole.
- Non-destructive methods are preferred; if a destructive method is used, the cabinet must remain capable of normal use (drawers can still be pulled in and out, remains structurally stable and sound, etc.)
- Mount display case
A good tutorial on the basics of weeding and application is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SjqH0rfTCMM

Generally, nose around youtube and you can teach yourself the process in a few minutes!

Manual:

|Rules=* Please pay for vinyl and transfer tape you take of a roll. Vinyl in the scrap-bin is free since whoever removed it from the roll should've paid for it, but even with scrap vinyl you're still using new transfer tape and that stuff adds up.
* Price list ???? FIXME

#Extensions --> Cutter/Plotter --> InkCut v1.0

|FAQs=*Why won't the plotter start after hitting the "Send" button?
** Good question. Seems like a failed file gets stuck in a waiting directory and that keeps any additional files from getting plotted. The junk failed file(s) must be removed before the plotter will accept new files.
A good tutorial on the basics of weeding and application is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SjqH0rfTCMM

Generally, nose around youtube and you can teach yourself the process in a few minutes!

Manual: [File:Mh 721 manual.pdf]

|Rules=* Please pay for vinyl and transfer tape you take of a roll. Vinyl in the scrap-bin is free since whoever removed it from the roll should've paid for it, but even with scrap vinyl you're still using new transfer tape and that stuff adds up.
* Price list ???? FIXME
