i3Switch01 - i3Detroit Core Network Switch

This is the core network switch that runs the i3Detroit [Network]. It is a Cisco 3750 10/100 PoE (803.3af) 24 port switch + 2 gigabit ports (SFP). It is L3 capable, meaning that it can do IP and IPv6 routing operations in addition to its switching tasks.

The current main IP address of this switch is 10.13.0.5

These switches are very reliable, and almost never need rebooting.  Unplugging and replugging the switch forces it to do a full restart. This can take 10-15 minutes, during which time the entire i3 network will be down. So don't do it.

PoE

The switch is capable of providing up to 370 watts of 48V power, delivered via the 802.3af standard method. Due to the existence of devices that may cause problems with power delivery, and it being relatively expensive and difficult to replace this switch, PoE is OFF by default.

Access Points plugged into the switch

The three i3Detroit wireless access points are plugged in and powered via this switch. The ports they are sitting on (FastEthernet 1/0/1 - 1/0/3) are configured very specifically for their operation. They are not to be moved to any other port for any reason.

Gigabit ports

The two gigabit port usage is as follows:

  • Port 1 (GigabitEthernet1/0/1) is connected to the [Wireless LAN Controller].
  • Port 2 (GigabitEthernet1/0/2) is currently unconnected, but will be attached to an additional switch.

Read-only account and useful commands

Read-only account

If someone wants to investigate the switch and look at how we've currently got it configured is welcome to do so!

The read-only account is i3detroit/i3detroit. You'll have to use SSH to reach the switch, telnet is disabled to it.

The web interface is disabled on it, and deliberately so, it causes more problems than it fixes.

Useful commands:

show version
Shows the current software version, serial numbers, uptime of the switch.
show startup-config
Shows the configuration the switch will start with, usually the same configuration it's running with.
show cdp neighbors
Shows other devices connected to the switch that are announcing themselves via the Cisco Discovery Protocol.
show cdp entry
Shows detailed information for a hostname that shows up via "show cdp neighbors".
show lldp neighbors
Much the same as "show cdp neighbors", but with the Link Layer Discovery Protocol.
show interface <optional interface name> | <summary>
This command will show detailed status of all interfaces.  Specifying a specific interface will show just that interface.  Adding summary will show a shorter table of interface statistics and if they're up or not.
show logging
Displays all the log messages that the switch currently has in its logbuffer (currently 64KB).
show vlan
Displays configured VLANs in the switch.
show power inline
Display PoE power usage for all ports on the switch.
show mac address-table
Displays all MAC addresses the switch knows about, and which port they're present on.
